I should have just kept the idea to myself. I knew I’d jinx it. My wife claims I do it all the time when watching sport. She’s kind of right. A statement by me that “Cork have it in the bag now….” is inevitably followed by 3 goals for Kilkenny in 90 seconds. Should you ever hear me state that “there’s only a minute left, Ireland surely have it won now…..”, go put a quick bet on a last-minute winning try for France. It’s a safe bet. So I really should have known better when, on August 1st, I declared my intention to post once a day every day for the month of August. On August 3rd, before I’d had a chance to post that day I was struck down quite suddenly by an unpleasant flu-like illness. Maybe even swine flu, if that’s still around. And so things have been quiet here since. Back to normality thanks to paracetemol, nurofen and rest. So where were we?
Ah yes. The two posts that did make it up for August so far were quite different in their content. The second of the two posts (a documentary wedding shot if you recall) seemed to be well received, which is always nice and thanks to those who commented on it and shared it here and elsewhere.
The first post – a selection of pictures from Howth captured a few weekends ago – is more relevant today as I realized last night it was missing a photo. I forgot to include a 6th photo that I (mostly) like in that set, so to give me a little breathing space to get back to reality here, that 6th photo is the subject of today’s post.
There’s actually a lot I don’t like about the image, but it’d be foolish for me to point those things out to you. Some of them I could probably “fix” (crooked anyone?) and others you may not even notice anyway (dust spot anyone?). So let’s instead talk a little (and only a little) about what I like about it.
Well essentially what I like about it, and what caused me to stop and take the photo, is simply and obviously the way all the boats are neatly lined up, not by chance of course, but due to the way I guess the harbour needs to operate it being, afterall, a car park for boats. It makes sense that they would be in a regular pattern when tied up. It caught my eye as I walked back along the pier having reached the end of the outward leg. In fact I first spotted it as a potential image when I was much further on, so getting this angle required a bit of back tracking.
I was less enthusiastic about the image in colour so tried a black and white conversion, and I think it does the image some favours. In particular the sky, with quite distinctive bands of grey anyway, seems to benefit from the conversion.
A sea gull or a rower or maybe even another boat at bottom left would have possibly enhanced the image even more. But anyway, didn’t I say I’d wouldn’t talk about what I didn’t like about the image?
Post-illness, I’m looking forward to the weekend, which should have one or two photo opportunities that, all going well, might help me keep up that never-to-be-mentioned-again posting schedule commitment. Stay tuned.
