It’s that time of year where camera clubs and photographic societies around the country go head-to-head for the Irish Photographic Federation’s inter-club panel competition, which is being held in Athlone this coming weekend.  Clubs can enter two panels – a colour panel and a monochrome panel – each consisting of 10 images.  I’m fortunate to have three of my images going forward to represent Dublin Camera Club, but there’s a little bit of work required in return for that honour.

That’s the reason I spent a long couple of hours last night printing, re-printing and double-mounting the three images that have been selected for the panel.  One of the photos selected is the picture of my niece Abbie that you see above.  The other two are shown below in the style of how they are now (ever so beautifully) mounted, and you can read about how they were created by clicking on the images.

The photograph of Abbie was a pretty straight forward studio shot, taken during the same session as other photographs that have appeared on the blog previously including another one of Abbie, one of her brother Matthew, and a personal favourite – Matthew and Abbie with their then 4-week old baby brother Samuel.

The lighting for those photographs is detailed pretty well in the last two of those posts, so you can refer to those for more information on that front, but I’ll be putting this lighting style to good use again tomorrow evening, but in my portable home studio (and using speedlights instead of studio lights) when Jonathan, who’s communion day I documented last Saturday, comes to have a formal communion portrait taken.  I hope to set up my lights this evening so that everything is good to go tomorrow when he arrives to the house, and it is my plan to take both a high-key portrait like the one shown above, and a low key portrait, but with a minimal change to the light setup (and using the white backdrop as a gray background).  Who knows how successful that plan will be, but I’ll keep you posted here, and all going well I might even get my next Flash-lit Friday post from it. Stay tuned!
