Yesterday morning, having checked in online nice and early to catch up with the Irish Blog Awards results (it still being Saturday evening back in Ireland), it was time to leave Sydney and head west towards Bathurst for a day-long exploration around the Blue Mountains and beyond.  It would prove to be one of those days where the photography wasn’t the highlight.

It would be over 14 hours before I would get back to my hotel, and in that time I would experience weather conditions that ranged from hot and sunny to thunder and lightning, with a spell of torrential rain and gob-stopper sized hail stones thrown in between.  I would be travelling on-road and off-road – including crossing a river, climbing almost vertical ascents, and descending at impossible angles. At times the terrain would require OS maps and satellite assistance (and I’m not talking your regular TomTom sat nav here) to navigate.  I would see Cockatoos and Kangaroos.  I would look out at a gorge 500 feet almost high, and later look over its edge.

First, though, I would photograph it from afar.

The photo above really doesn’t do the Kanangra Walls any justice.  They are a truly impressive sight that you probably have to see first hand, but as an estimation think “Cliffs of Moher” inland (and a tad warmer).  They weren’t to photograph well because of the hazy weather, and because the view from the walk through bush towards the walls was obscured by trees.

The above image was about the best view I could get of the walls themselves, with the plateaux on top of the exposed rock (on the right) being the place where I got my best view of the surrounding landscape. More on that to come.
