Bananas!

IMG_0043

I wouldn’t usually post an out of focus photo, or “soft” to put it kindly, but I like this graphic shot, captured last night in Tesco in Dundrum Town Centre as we did our grocery shopping, so here goes.  We rounded a corner from the vegetable section to the fruit section and both of us were struck by the carefully arranged rows of bananas and, having taken a bunch for the trolley, I snapped a photo.  The reason it’s a bit out of focus (only apparent to me later when I viewed it on the laptop) is that it was photographed with my new camera, which I’m adjusting to.  The camera?  An iPhone.

If something can become a bit of a habit after doing it twice, then photographing produce in the supermarket is becoming a bit of a habit for me.  The last time I did it, a couple of weeks ago, I touched on the concept of the best camera, and indeed the best photograph, both being close to hand.  One of the motivating factors in me upgrading to an iPhone, which I did a week later, was the ability to use its camera on the go for shots like this.  I was aware in advance that the camera on the iPhone isn’t the best in the world, but the array of applications available for it is second to none, and this was a consideration.

Also a consideration was the ability to upload stuff easily to Facebook, Twitter, or indeed via Wordpress to here – though that’s not something I’ve mastered quite yet.  Sending photos by email is quick and easy, and applications such as Best Camera, which allows layer-based photo-editing, and one called Shake-It, which mimics a Polaroid camera in a way that I really like, both add to the appeal.

I’m still adjusting to life as an iPhone owner, but can see its uses as a photographer.  Be it capturing reference shots of things that catch my eye – such as the bar that I was looking at for an hour and a half during last week’s camera club meeting (moved from our usual premises due to a burst pipe), thinking all the time how it would make a great background for an evironmental portrait, or indeed shots such as these bananas, it’ll most likely be responsible for me taking more photos, and that’s a good thing for a photographer.

As to why it’s out of focus – well I’m getting used to the quirks of the camera, how it focuses, what the best focus distances are, and what depth of field it’s likely to offer.  Next time I’ll know better.  Oh and incidentally this shot was processed entirely on the iPhone using Best Camera, apart from the watermark which was added in Aperture.
