I guess I would temper it by saying I am sure there are many others who would argue the case for primes over zooms - there's probably a case for primes forcing you to think more about composition for instance. But for me and the way that I photograph, the flexibility of zooms is important. I would suggest that at some point you spend money on the Nikkor f/1.8 50mm which is very reasonable - or if you can afford it the f/1.4. I have the f/1.8 and it's small, light, sharp and very good value. And it'll give you an idea of whether you like the idea of investing in prime lenses instead of zooms.
