Today is probably the biggest day in the Irish sporting calendar this year, as Cork and Kerry battle in the All Ireland Senior Football Final to determine which one gets bragging rights, and the Sam McGuire cup, for the next 12 months. As a Cork man, I know who I’m cheering for, but will be doing so from afar.
When the final whistle blows I hope to be celebrating a Cork success from an Irish bar in Dubrovnik, if one can be found that is showing the match. Failing that, I’ll have to rely on web updates, or text messages from home.
Where I won’t be watching it from, is the seat which is the subject of todays photograph. It would be a particularly good seat to have today – it is in the Premium Level of Croke Park, and I photographed it when attending the Photovision Show at the stadium a couple of weeks ago.
I chose shallow depth of field to isolate this one seat from all the others, let the shutter speed fall where the camera, in aperture priority mode, thought it should. At first attempt, this was 1/50s, but as I was using a focal length of 92mm, didn’t fancy my chances of handholding a steady shot. So I increased the ISO from 200 to 400 to help keep the shot sharp.
I like the way the chair is lit – all available light, but the way it sat under the shadow of the stand meant the overcast sky acted like a huge softbox to give a nice rim light on the chair, and add definition to its edges. It is this that caught my eye and prompted me to take the photo.
I hope that whoever sits in this seat today enjoys the game, and is happy with the outcome. Assuming, that is, that he comes from Cork.
