Yesterday was an anniversary of sorts for this blog, and today is one for Deirdre and Enda, who are marking the end of the first year as a happily married couple, and the start of the second of many more.
Their anniversary date is one of those that Enda should be very unlikely to forget in years to come – they married on Friday the 13th afterall. They are trumped in the “memorable dates to get married” department however by Deirdre’s sister Shelley, who married her husband Kevin on April 1st. (I’m still not convinced that the whole thing wasn’t a big April Fools joke). I’ve told Deirdre’s one remaining unmarried sister Aisling that she has to get married on February 29th, just to complete the set.
Anyway, about the photograph – it is, obviously, of their first dance. This time last year I hadn’t evolved to artificially lit dance floors, so this shot was taken in the available light (not much), and handheld. It is consequently a little “soft”, but the black and white conversion is always a good trick to have for those images.
Incidentally for first dance photographs I like to think I’m developing a few techniques as I go, and one of those is to position myself on the other side of the couple to everyone else – that way you take in the guests’ reactions as well as the bride and groom themselves. Of course, by moving away from the other guests too, there’s always a chance you might get lucky with someone else’s flash acting as an off camera light source for you.
It doesn’t feel like a full year since I took this photograph – I’m sure Dee and Enda are having similar thoughts today. Happy Anniversary!
