I’ve posted some wildlife photographs on a couple of occasions, but mostly they have been taken during visits to Dublin Zoo, and strictly speaking taking photographs of animals away from their natural environment and in a confined space isn’t wildlife photography. Today’s photo of a wild rabbit out and about exploring its neighbourhood in West Cork is therefore a more accurate representation of that genre of photography.
I took this photograph in the back garden of my parents’ house in Murragh in West Cork, not long after they moved there. There is no shortage of rabbits to be seen – in fact they named the house “Burrowfield” partly because of this – but only on one occasion have I actually tried to photograph them.
I like the depth of field I achieved in this shot, with the foreground and background blurring and the rabbit in focus. (In truth, I think I just missed the focus – it is sharp on his fur, but his eye is slightly off – and usually that’s where should be sharp).
I took a couple of shots in quick succession from inside the house looking out through the living room window, and for this shot he popped his head up a little, perhaps hearing my camera, giving me a pose I like.
It’s no David Attenborough-type achievement to get a photo of a rabbit in the back garden, but it’s a little more rewarding than photographing penguins in their enclosure in the zoo.
