Last autumn I spent an enjoyable few hours photographing around Kinsale in Cork, and particularly around Charles Fort just outside the town, and I’ve previously posted an image I took shortly before I took the shot you see above. Shortly after taking that shot of the VW beetle I turned and entered the fort itself, and was pleasantly surprised to see a map of the fort made from tiles on the ground, and knew it would be the subject of the next photo I took.
I wanted to find a good angle for the shot, and I was conscious that the sky was a nice deep blue, and that there was lovely oblique sunlight falling on the stone wall, which was highlighting the frame of the glass-less windows particularly nicely, so with those two elements I had my background chosen.
I got down low to the ground, and used a wide angle lens to take in a sweep of the colourful map in the foreground, letting the autofocus to focus on the map, but using a large depth of field provided by the small aperture to keep most of the image sharp.
The end result probably makes the map look bigger than it is, but I wanted to give it prominence in the picture so I’m ok with that.
I posted yesterday that today’s image would be helping to promote an upcoming concert by my sister and that is the case because that concert is going to be held at Charles Fort in July in an outdoor setting (lets hope for good weather). The fort is spectacular to visit, so to see an open air concert there will be particularly special. Úna is singing and playing with a Slovenian folk group by the name of Terrafolk, and the concert is in Charles Fort at 7pm on Saturday, July 18th, 2009 as part of Kinale Arts Week. The other two concerts at the venue earlier in the week are Paul Brady and Imelda May, so Úna will be in good company.
If all goes to plan I should be able to get some good photographs at it also.
Full details of the arts week, and the three concerts at Charles Fort, are here.
