Whenever I have my camera switched on I’m on the lookout for those photographs that are a little bit different from the norm, and this is particularly the case when I am at a wedding. I guess I like to try to get those different shots which tell the story of the day.
My mind must have been in this mode as I was taking an umbrella from the boot of the car before a friend’s wedding last year when I spotted this view of Aoife, who was touching up her make up in the passenger seat before the ceremony.
I had just been getting my camera bag organized and so my camera was in easy reach. I had the camera in Aperture Priority mode, with a wide aperture already set, as when I got into the church light levels were likely to be low. So with the camera set to handle the exposure for me, and the mid-gray tone surrounding the mirror meaning it couldn’t really get the exposure wrong, I just asked Aoife for a quick smile and to look at me through the mirror, and on my first attempt this shot was produced.
I really like it, but I go through phases of thinking that I should have moved slightly to the left to get both eyes in the mirror, slightly to the right to get just one eye, or stayed where I was. I did try a bit of cloning to see if I could move the right hand side of the mirror a little to the left, but it was near impossible to get it looking natural. A better idea might be to try to recreate the shot at the next wedding we attend.
Or I might just finally decide that I like it as it is.
