After I had taken yesterday’s photo of the Reichstag in Berlin, I made my way outside onto the roof of the building where there was a slightly interrupted view of the iconic Brandenburg Gate.  It was nicely lit up, and with the twilight sky, I thought it would be a good photograph.  I didn’t have a tripod though so I was going to have to improvise to keep the camera steady for the slow exposure that would be required.

I didn’t need to be too clever to get the camera steady – there was a low wall around the roof with a nice flat top which would support the camera nicely.  I did had to sacrifice somewhat on the point of view of the photograph to position the camera on this roof – ideally I would have had it higher and avoided cropping off some of the bottom of the the gate – but that would have required me to hand hold the camera.  Given the exposure was 4 seconds, this wasn’t an option.  I could have opened up the aperture, but I wanted to keep a reasonable range of the shot in focus.  The 4 second exposure adds the nice effect on the headlights of the traffic near the centre of the frame.

It’s not the greatest photograph of the Brandenburg Gate, and certainly not the best vantage point from which to photograph it, but given I was there and this was the view that presented itself to me, it was a photograph worth taking.
