With the sun shining and a Tuesday off work, this year I attended my first St. Patrick’s parade in Dublin, more for the photo opportunities than for the “Irishness”, although there was plenty of both. I’ve chosen this “cowboy” for the first of three St. Patrick’s Day themed posts this week.
This chap was standing on a post box on O’Connell Street, keeping a keen eye on his surroundings (presumably on the lookout for bandits) when he got very animated at the unusual sight of King Kong making his way from Parnell Square towards the GPO. He had watched the Garda band march past some time earlier, and so knowing that they were by now across the river on Dame Street he would have reckoned that they weren’t going to be much help. I can only presume he was therefore considering how it would fall to him to deal with the oversized gorilla as he pointed out the impending danger to his sidekick (aka father).
I had taken to “people watching” with my camera as soon as I arrived into the city centre, realising quite quickly that I was about 3 hours too late to get any decent shots of the parade floats. With 8 to 10 people deep as far as the eye could see along the parade route, there was no way through for me and my camera by the time of my arrival. Thankfully (as the next couple of posts will also show), there was plenty to photograph in the crowd.
